Fitting In and Finding Yourself

As I rewatched the Lego Movie, I found myself appreciating the main character’s struggle with trying to fit in and find connection. Emmit tries so hard to follow the “instructions” to be liked, but finds that he still isn’t getting it right. Just like us, we so desperately want to connect with others that we try to do everything we can to make people like us. We choose to surround ourselves with others we see as being “cool” and put up with feeling like an outsider. Emmit’s sad realization that the people he works with don’t actually see him as an important person in their life reflects the same feelings we experience when we realize that the people we have been trying to connect with are not actually our friends. It’s so hard to feel disconnected and like you aren’t doing enough or aren’t good enough to be included in the group.

You are good enough and cool enough as you are. The key is finding the people that make you feel your best and surrounding yourself with them. It can be hard to find these people and can sometimes feel like it may be years before you find good friends where you actually fit in, but sometimes taking a step back and noticing who you feel your best around, who fits the characteristics of a good friend, and who has shown up for you are the first steps in finding this group of friends. Wanting to be in community and connecting with others is a basic human need and desire. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to belong, to feel loved, to feel appreciated. Instead of focusing on how to make others like you and choose you, choosing to focus more on what you like and choosing yourself is the first step in finding yourself and your people. The first step to finding true connection and belonging.
